Travelling by air is certainly more convenient and sometimes even economically advantageous compared to ship. From Milan and Rome you can fly with Olympic, Aegean and Alitalia airlines. From Milan Malpensa you can fly at attractive prices with Easyjet. From Venice, you can also fly with Alpi Eagles. Aegean Airlines, thanks to an agreement with AirOne, connects Athens with Turin, Venice, Trieste, Genoa, Palermo, Catania and Lamezia Terme.
However, if you have enough time, the trip by ferry is not to be excluded because it certainly has a greater charm and represents a special part of the journey. You can reach Patras by boat from Venice, Ancona, Bari or Brindisi with Cretan companies Minoan and Anek or with Superfast, BlueStar, Ventouris, Agoudimos and HML. The prices, depending on the company and season vary from 100 to 170 € for a return ticket. Almost all of these companies have organized buses to transfer passengers from the port of Patras to Athens or Piraeus. Alternatively you can reach Athens by the local bus line or by car.
The Eleftherios Venizelos airport (by the name of the Cretan politician who influenced the life of the nation in the first half of the twentieth century) is 20 km from downtown Athens. The E95 bus connects it with Syntagma in about an hour and operates 24 hours. In 2007, the trip cost 3.20 € by bus compared to 6 € needed for the subway (line 3 for Syntagna or Monastiraki). Other buses serving the area are the E96 (Piraeus) and E93 (for the suburban bus station in Athens).
