Near Athens

In the southern part of Athens, stretching along the Saronic Gulf to areas of Attica, there are hundreds of beaches that have beautiful clean water and are easy to access. Some of these beaches were rewarded by the programme "Europe Blue Flags" due to their clean and well protected coastal environment.
Faliro, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza are easily accessible from Athens in less than one hour. These are areas particularly suited for walks along the beach, for swimming and for a nice meal on the sea. Athens is one of the few European capitals that contain such a wide variety of beaches, although invariably crowded in the summer. Their popularity began in the 60s and 70s when Onassis and the new Greek movie stars discovered Attica as a privileged social stage.
The Temple of Poseidon, in the southern tip of Attica is open until sunset and worth a visit. High on the rocks of Sounio, it was built for Pericles in the fifth century BC. Its rocky columns set among a romantic sunset are a popular touristic destination.
