Redesigned: Cycladic art, Hellenistic jewellery, icons and Copts tissues.
This is one of the most important museums in Athens that you absolutely must visit. It was founded by the noble Benakis and opened in 1931 and was recently completely renovated. It contains over 45,000 items of the collection of Benakis and other donors. You can admire objects covering 1500 years of history of Byzantine art and architecture, including ecclesiastical objects, mosaics, sculptures, frescoes, icons from Greece, from regions of the Balkans, Cyprus, Constantinople and Russia. It is also an art gallery, an exhibition of games, collections of fabrics and embroidery, and Chinese and Islamic works of art. This museum can rightly be proud to host one of the richest collections of Byzantine icons in existence. It also has a bookshop and giftshop, which is a good place to buy souvenirs and gifts.
