Panathenaic Stadium in Athens

This impressive monument is in front of the National Garden and is truly worthy of being seen. It was built from white marble and shaped like a horseshoe. The first stadium of the city was built in wood at exactly this point in 330 BC. It was then reconstructed in marble by Herod Atticus, but today we can admire only a reproduction. This was the place where the athletic games were held during the Panathenaic festival. The current stadium was built in 1870 for the first Olympic Games in modern history (1896).
