The square of the Constitution (Syntagma in Greek) is the central square of Athens, just below the Parliament. It was built as a royal palace for the first king of Greece Otto I around 1830. In front of it there is the monument to the Unknown Soldier, a relief depicting a soldier dying and bearing an inscription with passages from the Pericles’ Epitaph (funeral prayer). The monument is guarded night and day by two soldiers called Euzoni. The changing of the guard takes place every hour and is a unique event that attracts many people. At night, returning from Plaka, go and see the one at 2 or 3 AM, in a surreal atmosphere.

The National Garden, located behind the square, represents an oasis of freshness and peace that is very pleasant and relaxing. There are many lush plants, a small botanical garden, a cafe, a zoo, a pretty little lake and an amusement park for children. It is open from morning until sunset and covers an area of no less than 160,000 square meters. There are 500 species of plants, shrubs and trees from all over the world.
